Architecture

Architecture is the most concrete and lasting expression of man's social needs.

Design Aims

Heathwood Cardillo Wilson Pty Ltd has consistently delivered innovative, original and contextually responsive design solutions. This innovation is not confined to aesthetics or superficial visual appeal, but extends to the innovative application of: materials science, spatial planning, functionality, flexibility, serviceability, climate control, energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Consultation

Most projects undertaken by Heathwood Cardillo Wilson involve extensive user group and stakeholder consultation. As principal design consultant, we assume a lead role in managing and co-ordinating consultation with building consultants, clients and users of proposed facilities.

Our methodology, using computer-based room data collection and manipulation methods and graphical analysis of functional requirements, allows formulation of accurate and comprehensive recording of user needs. This is a key process in producing lucid design briefs which, at the outset of the design process, define the parameters of a building project precisely and are clearly understood by all concerned.

Client and user group involvement throughout the design stages is encouraged to foster ownership of design solutions and to help give rise to buildings which meet clients' and users' functional, aesthetic and emotional needs and respond appropriately to their environment.

Heritage Response

We have long recognised the importance of places of pre and post-European cultural heritage. As built environment professionals, we understand the need for preservation, or as appropriate, respectful adaptation of heritage buildings for contemporary use.

We are familiar with the provisions of the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter, 1999, and its accompanying guidelines and codes. Work undertaken in or close to heritage places is guided by the principles enunciated by the International Council on Monuments and Sites as documented in the Burra Charter.

Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD)

Environmentally responsible and responsive design principles are at the core of all that we do at Heathwood Cardillo Wilson. We endorse the International Union of Architects "Declaration of Independence for a Sustainable Future" which in part recognises that:

"Buildings and the built environment play a major role in the human impact on the natural environment and on the quality of life; sustainable design integrates consideration of resources and energy efficiency, healthy buildings and materials, ecologically and socially sensitive land use, and aesthetic sensitivity that inspires, affirms and ennobles; sustainable design can significantly reduce adverse human impacts on the natural environment while simultaneously improving quality of life and economic well-being."

Our design processes include considerations of the many aspect of green, energy-efficient and sustainable architecture, including:

+ Orientation
+ Climatic Responsiveness
+ Solar loads and thermal performance
+ Daylighting
+ Embodied energy of materials
+ Renewable, non-toxic materials
+ Energy efficiency - building fabric & equipment
+ Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
+ Life-cycle energy analysis
+ Rainwater harvesting and recycling.
