St Josephs Catholic Church Bracken Ridge
On the western slope of a hill in suburban Bracken Ridge, the site,
which is shared with the parish primary school, has dramatic views
beyond the surrounding houses to the distant D'Aguilar Range.
The parish requested the church building to form a gateway to the
campus comprising church, school, hall and parish offices.

The steeple that houses the clerestory servces as a symbol of the
parish within the broader community.
The challenge of this scheme was to bring the western mountains and
sky quietly into the assembly, while maintaining the focus of the
space on the ritual action and filtering the distractions of the suburban
elements in the foreground. The clarity of the action is maintained
by a 9m high clerestory above the sanctuary providing indirect light
to the area. An integrated system of computer-controlled shading devices
regulate the internal environment to avoid problems of heat and glare.

The building has a clearly defined triangular plan with the Bapistry
and entry at one corner and the Reconciliation and Blessed Sacrament
Chapels at the other two corners. The sanctuary is central to the
long western wall an dprojects into the assembly.
Concrete and steel materials express their own character without adornment
and contrast with the warmth of the natural secondary elements. |

Mary Mackillop Catholic Church - Birkdale.
The assembly space seats 400 with no-one being more than 9 rows from
the centre of ritual action. The complexity of the exterior is resolved
into a simple fan shape, focused on the altar which is brightly front
lit from an unseen south light above. The west side of the building
is fortress like and the north opens onto a protected courtyard shielded
from the distractions of a traffic roundabout.
The ribbed exterior provides a visual link with the fast disappearing
local farm architecture and forms a vigorous texture to the concrete
obscuring surface and colour imperfections, and discouraging would-be
graffiti vandals.

All Saints Albany Creek
This simple square building with a pyramid roof, houses an unconventional
assembly area which seeks to implement changes to the traditional
arrangement of Catholic worship space arising from the Second Vatican
Council.
The design of the church aims to provide a simple yet strong building
with an elegant and clearly expressed structure defining a well-lit
and generous worship space. |

The bapistry is located at the entry, symbolising entry into the life
of the Church, birth and renewal. The vestals comprising the font
allow allow for full immersion of both infants and adults.
The roof is supported on 12 sturdy concrete columns and held clear
above the walls on steel beams providing clarity of structure and
encouraging light and breezes deep into the building. As aa counterpoint
to the main pyramid roof, the porte cochere roof is raised in greeting
on branching columns, resembling the parish logo.
