Sir
Edwin Marsden Tooth Building - St Pauls School
This is the first purpose built administration building constructed
for this 45-year-old school. The brief required it to be conspicuous
from Strathpine Rd, welcoming, convenient to use, adaptable, transparent
and environmentally responsible.
It has 2 storeys with a partial basement and a long, relatively thin
(66m x 20m) asymmetrical boomerang shaped plan whose arms embrace
the entry drive.
Set in a glazed screen and contrasting strongly with the glass and
rough concrete columns, the timber-framed entrance doors are fitted
with long robust handles, inviting the grip of folk of all sizes.
The entrance is sheltered by a timber-lined, shallow inverted pyramid
canopy, the soffits of which rise in greeting to approaching pedestrian
and vehicular traffic.
The narrow plan, fully glazed internal and external walls, ceilings
which increase in height to the building's edge and glare resisting
glass, all combine to maximise natural light and unpardonable the
moderate glare in working areas. Artificial light is commonly unnecessary.
External walls are protected by extended floor plates, eaves, and
external venetian blinds which respond automatically to changing conditions
to exclude direct sunlight from glazing.
The structure is a simple grid of lightly exposed concrete aggregate
columns at 6.6m centres, both ways, supporting off-white concrete
floors and a steel framed over sailing roof which floats gently upwards
to the edge of 3.5m wide eaves.
The hallmarks of this building's design aqre responsiveness to the
brief and to the environment, minimal operating and maintenance costs,
simplicity, and the directness of expression.
